The Rise of Ambient Commerce

There's a pattern I've been watching accelerate over the last year that I don't think has a clean name yet. So I'm going to call it ambient commerce, and I think it's the most important shift in consumer behavior since the smartphone put the internet in everyone's pocket.

The basic idea: AI acts on your behalf before you even know to ask. Not because you opened an app, launched a search, or scanned a QR code. But because the context was there, the opportunity was real, and the agent was paying attention.

The old model is broken

Think about how savings worked for the last decade. You had to remember to clip a coupon. You had to install a browser extension and hope it fired at the right time. You had to scroll through a loyalty app, find the right offer, and tap before the timer ran out. Every step in that chain was friction. And friction meant most people, most of the time, just paid full price.

The coupon industry taught consumers that saving money is work. That's backwards. The value was always there. Retailers were sending deals, loyalty programs were stacking up points, brand emails were full of offers. The problem was never supply, it was surface area. Too much noise, too much fragmentation, too much cognitive load to act on any of it reliably.

What AI changes

The shift isn't that AI can find deals faster than a human. It's that AI eliminates the need for the human to be in the loop at all for the routine parts. The opportunity gets found, evaluated, and surfaced at the right moment, automatically.

That's what we're building at Majir. You connect your email once. From that point forward, Majir reads the signals that are already there, the loyalty offer from the coffee shop you go to every Tuesday, the 15% off code buried in a receipt email, the promotional credit from a brand you signed up for six months ago and forgot about. Today, Majir puts those offers in one place and alerts you before they expire. The broader vision is to surface them automatically whenever the timing makes sense.

No coupon hunting. No app to remember to open. The AI sees the opportunity, acts on it, and the user gets the benefit. That's ambient commerce.

This is bigger than savings

The reason I think this matters beyond Majir is that it represents a fundamental rebalancing of how value flows in retail. For years, the consumer's attention was the scarce resource. Retailers competed for it, ad platforms monetized it, and the consumer bore the cost, in time, in cognitive load, in missed savings.

Ambient commerce inverts that. When AI agents act on behalf of consumers, the consumer's intent becomes the input and the outcome becomes automatic. The retailer still wins, more conversions, less cart abandonment, better ROI on loyalty spend. But the consumer wins harder, because the friction they were absorbing just disappears.

We're still in the early stages. Most people don't have an AI agent watching their inbox for savings opportunities. Most retailers aren't thinking about how to surface their offers to an agent layer rather than a human attention layer. But that's changing fast.

Why we started with the inbox

When Maxwell and I were designing the first version of Majir, we had a simple question: where does the richest, most actionable savings data already exist for a typical consumer? The answer was obvious. Their inbox. Every loyalty program they've ever signed up for. Every receipt from every purchase. Every promotional campaign from every brand they've bought from.

That data is sitting there, unread or half-read, buried in promotional tabs. A human can't process all of it. An AI can. The current product focuses on inbox intelligence and expiry alerts. Majir does not send location-based alerts today; verified context remains part of the broader vision.

That's the first version of ambient commerce we're shipping. But the vision is broader: an agent that knows your spending patterns, your brand relationships, your upcoming trips, and your loyalty balances across every program, and acts on your behalf across all of them without you lifting a finger.

We're just getting started. But the direction is clear. Savings shouldn't require effort. In a world with ambient commerce, they won't.
